Passionless in IT

Can “IT crawl out from under the ambition-crushing, innovation-sucking, soul-destroying minutiae of just keeping the digital lights on.”
An interesting line from a recent article in Computerworld.  Seems the passion within IT of truly engaged professionals has fallen from a high in 2007 of 12% to only 4% in 2009.
Without a doubt it’s been a difficult [...]

Back online

It’s been a busy few weeks, I think, since the ole blog has been functional.  As I’ve alluded to previously, it was time for a fairly serious change at philatkinson.org.  Baseball and softball will remain a passion here, but I expect it’s influence on this site to lessen as I’m able to spend more and [...]

Interacting with IT

Jennifer sent me this list a few weeks ago; it’s one of those internet lists that get circulated via email.  I haven’t personally experienced all of these, but over the last 15 years, I’ve experienced my share of them… they’re a lot funnier reading than experiencing for sure.
Years ago an office manager who got sick [...]

Glad to meet you, I’m Negative Nancy

So today I’m Negative Nancy, all because I pointed someone to Preston Gralla’s article, “Why Chrome OS Will Turn to Lead“.  They didn’t even want to hear a differing opinion, sorta like sticking your head in the sand pretending all is right in the world, I guess.  I don’t know if Gralla is right or [...]

So you think you’re having a bad day

One of my techs had a software problem this morning and had to call support — a pretty rare event around here.  And after describing the problem to support, the tech responded and I quote. “I knew I should’ve taken the day off.”

It took a little longer than anticipated, but the new JCBI website is online.
Because of several ongoing projects at work I choose Wordpress over Drupal for this website. I sort of have mixed feeling about that decision, I feel a little trapped by Wordpress and miss the flexibility that Drupal offers me. Some [...]

Back from VMworld 2008

Spent last week in Las Vegas at VMworld along with 14,000+ other IT professionals.  Pretty amazing what 14,000 nerds can do to cell networks, wireless and internet access –you can pretty much forget about it.  It was my first VMworld and my first conference in years.
I won’t go into the details of the conference — [...]

Blackberry or iPhone

I rarely post anything about technology anymore, which may seem odd for an IT guy. There’s just so many folks already doing that sort of thing, I just don’t feel that I can add much more to the conversation already taking place. And besides, I’m more into the management of technology these days and [...]

Another great banner ad from Apple

Apple’s "Get a mac" campaign has been sprouting up all over the internet. Here’s another banner ad campaign from Apple. And for my money, given a choice between Vista or Apple, I’m going with Apple.

Google’s AdSense

Seemed to me that a lot of the Drupal based blogs/websites I’ve run across make use of Google’s AdSense, so I decided to give it a whirl on my site. Using Drupal’s AdSense module makes setting things up on your website a breeze. And as you’d expect, Google has done an amazing job [...]
